A Local’s Guide to Amsterdam’s Most Beautiful Autumn Walks

Discover beautiful autumn walks in Amsterdam, from Vondelpark and the canal belt to Amsterdamse Bos and the Amstel. Explore parks, riverside paths and local neighbourhoods, then return to your Cityden apartment and enjoy the city at your pace this autumn.

Beautiful Autumn Walks in Amsterdam: Parks, Canals

Autumn changes Amsterdam. It is one of the best seasons to enjoy beautiful autumn walks in the city.

The trees turn shades of yellow, orange, and red. Fallen leaves cover the streets, and the canals reflect the colours of the season. Meanwhile, cooler days make walking one of the best ways to explore the city.

In fact, Amsterdam has more than 400,000 trees, so there is no shortage of autumn colour. From famous parks to quieter neighbourhoods and riverside paths, you can discover a different side of the city simply by putting on comfortable shoes and heading outside.

If you are visiting Amsterdam in autumn, here are some of the most beautiful walks to add to your trip.

1. Vondelpark: The Classic Amsterdam Autumn Walk

You cannot talk about autumn walks in Amsterdam without mentioning Vondelpark.

Opened in 1865, it is Amsterdam’s best-known city park. Its winding paths, ponds and large trees make it particularly attractive when the leaves begin to change colour.

Start near the northern entrance and simply follow the paths through the park. There is no need to rush or follow a strict route.

Along the way, you can discover the rose garden, find the Picasso sculpture or stop somewhere for a coffee. Moreover, the park is close to Museumplein, so you can easily combine your walk with a visit to one of Amsterdam’s museums.

Early morning is a particularly pleasant time to visit. The paths are quieter, locals are walking their dogs and the city is slowly waking up.

Very Amsterdam. Very autumn.

2. Amsterdamse Bos: Escape the City Without Going Far

Want more trees and fewer buildings?

Head towards Amsterdamse Bos.

This large green area on the edge of Amsterdam offers plenty of space for walking, cycling and spending time outdoors. It feels very different from the busy streets and canals of the city centre.

During autumn, the wooded areas are especially beautiful. Therefore, this is a good option if you want a longer walk rather than a quick stroll between sightseeing stops.

Amsterdamse Bos is also close to Amstelveen. As a result, guests staying at Cityden Stadshart or Cityden Zuidas can easily make it part of an autumn day outdoors.

Bring comfortable shoes and allow yourself some extra time.

There is no need to walk quickly here.

3. Follow the Amstel River

For a walk that combines water, city views and local life, follow the Amstel.

The river provides a natural route through Amsterdam. You can start closer to the historic centre and gradually walk south, watching the surroundings change as you go.

An official Amsterdam walking route follows the river for around 2.2 kilometres, passing several cultural and historic sights before finishing around Amstel Station.

Alternatively, continue further south if you have more time. Beyond the denser parts of the city, the landscape becomes greener and more open. Following the Amstel south eventually brings you towards the quieter Amstelland area, with its dykes, polders and open countryside.

On a clear autumn day, it is an easy way to see how quickly Amsterdam changes from busy streets to open landscapes.

City first. Countryside later.

4. Westerpark: Green Space Meets Local Amsterdam

Westerpark is a good choice if you want your autumn walk to include more than nature.

The park combines green spaces, ponds and walking paths with the former Westergas industrial site. Today, the surrounding area is home to restaurants, cafés, cultural spaces and creative businesses.

That makes it easy to create your own afternoon.

Start with a walk through the park. Then, explore the Westergas area or stop for something to eat or drink.

There is even an established walking route of just over four kilometres through and around Westerpark, taking you past historic points, nature and public art.

During autumn, the mix of old industrial buildings and changing leaves gives this part of Amsterdam plenty of character.

Moreover, Westerpark is a natural choice if you are staying in Amsterdam-West.

5. Amstelpark: A Quieter Autumn Alternative

Vondelpark may get most of the attention, but it is certainly not Amsterdam’s only park worth exploring.

Amstelpark is located in the south of Amsterdam and has a wide variety of trees, plants and gardens. The park was originally created as part of the Floriade horticultural exhibition in 1972, which helps explain the variety of green spaces you can still find there today.

In autumn, take your time walking through its paths and gardens.

The park also has an orangery, a Japanese garden and other areas to discover. Therefore, it works well for visitors who prefer a slower afternoon away from the busiest parts of central Amsterdam.

It is also conveniently located for Amsterdam-Zuid.

Bring a coffee. Put your phone away for a while.

The emails can wait.

6. Oosterpark and Amsterdam-Oost

For a more local atmosphere, head east.

Oosterpark is a large green space with ponds, streams and plenty of walking paths. It attracts a diverse mix of local residents and visitors, giving it a different feel from some of Amsterdam’s more tourist-heavy areas.

However, you do not have to stop at the park.

One option is to combine Oosterpark with a longer walk through Amsterdam-Oost. For example, an official wildlife walking route connects green spaces and local areas around the Plantage and Amsterdam-Oost, including Oosterpark. The complete route is around four kilometres.

Afterwards, continue exploring the neighbourhood or find a local café.

It is a simple way to combine autumn colours with everyday Amsterdam.

7. The Canal Belt: Autumn in the Heart of Amsterdam

You do not need a park to enjoy autumn in Amsterdam.

Sometimes the best walk is simply along the canals.

Start early in the morning, when the centre is quieter, and follow whichever canal catches your attention. The Herengracht, Keizersgracht and Prinsengracht all offer classic Amsterdam views.

However, do not worry too much about following a map.

Cross a bridge when something looks interesting. Turn into a side street. Stop for coffee. Then find your way back to the water.

During autumn, the trees lining the canals turn yellow and orange, while fallen leaves gather along the streets and waterways. Amsterdam’s official tourism guide even highlights the city’s parks and historic canals as some of the best places to enjoy the autumn foliage.

Sometimes getting slightly lost is the plan.

When Is the Best Time for an Autumn Walk in Amsterdam?

Amsterdam’s autumn season runs from September through November. However, the scenery changes throughout these months.

September can still bring mild, late-summer days. By October, autumn colours usually become a much bigger part of the city. Meanwhile, November brings cooler temperatures, shorter days and a different atmosphere.

Whatever the month, check the weather before heading outside.

Rain is always possible in Amsterdam. Therefore, a waterproof jacket and comfortable shoes are useful.

If the weather changes halfway through your walk, do what the locals do.

Find somewhere warm. Order a coffee. Continue later.

Tips for Walking Around Amsterdam in Autumn

Walking around Amsterdam is easy, but a little preparation makes it more comfortable.

Keep these tips in mind:

  • Wear comfortable shoes that can handle wet streets.
  • Bring a light waterproof jacket.
  • Dress in layers because temperatures can change during the day.
  • Start earlier if you want quieter parks and streets.
  • Keep an eye out for cyclists when crossing cycle lanes.
  • Combine longer walks with a café, museum or lunch stop.
  • Bring a portable charger if you use your phone for navigation.
  • Leave some room in your schedule for unplanned stops.

Most importantly, do not try to see everything at once.

Amsterdam is better when you give it time.
